Let’s Make Magic
Kansas SCBWI Annual Conference
October 26th and 27th 2012

So, I decided to finish off this sketch. You’ll notice that I made the Zimmerman character look more like the actual guy instead of a sort of generic fat guy like in the sketch.

This is my entry for this week’s Blown Cover design competition. The contest asks for a sketched design idea for a New Yorker cover using that week’s theme. The theme was Trayvon Martin. Mine didn’t win, but I thought I’d share it anyway.
Edit: The finished version is here.
I think this is the final version. I’ll put it aside for a week and then come back to it once the “Look at the masterpiece I just created!” buzz has faded. Then I should be able to judge it more objectively and see if anything needs to be changed.
In the meantime, there’s nothing to keep all of you from commenting. What do you think? Is there anything that I need to change about this? I haven’t double-checked the colors on my other monitor. Do they look okay or are they too bright? Does anything look awkward? The wrong color? Incorrect shadows? If you notice anything, pleas let me know. It’s digital, so I can still change quite a lot if necessary.

MAGIC for Fun and Profit

Want one? I’m selling them here.
Here’s the finished version. The first sketch showed him in mid-air over the water, as if caught in mid-leap. Once I drew it, I decided he kind of looked like he was already in the water. I think it would work either way, but I already did a mid-leap image last time. I thought drawing bubbles in this would be fun, so I put him underwater. Same font as the other one: Komika Boo.
