I’ve been quiet here lately because I’ve been working on a picture book. Learning A-Z commissioned me through Storybook Arts to illustrate a graded reader titled Standing Up to the Bullies, written by Ashley Kazery. I just finished the last image this afternoon. I’ll probably have a few minor edits before publication, but I’m more-or-less finished.

So, at one point this summer, when the temperatures were in the 90’s, our air conditioning went out. I started on the sketch for this on that evening. My window fans aren’t as good as A/C, but they’re a million times better than nothing. So much better. 🙂

Here’s a new illustration commissioned by United Methodist Publishing House. I think it’s going in a kid’s history textbook. It’s supposed to show black slaves hiding and sneaking, and sometimes being smuggled north out of slavery before the civil war. I was given very specific elements that I needed to include in the picture, and it was quite a task to fit it all in. I’m rather proud I managed it.

Here’s Hitch, the bully in the anti-bullying book I’m starting work on for Learning A-Z. This is the second version where he’s in regular clothes and blonde.

Here’s Hitch, the bully in the anti-bullying book I’m starting work on for Learning A-Z. This is the first version where he was supposed to be wearing army fatigues.

Here’s Marcus, the main character in the anti-bullying book I’m starting work on for Learning A-Z. He’s the bully’s victim.

I’m starting work on an anti-bullying book for Learning A-Z. The first step is to work out how that main characters are going to look. Here’s Evan, the bully’s friend.

I colored an old sketch of my brother. Now, you may think this is an insulting picture because of the foolish expression he’s wearing, but it isn’t. This is my brother making silly faces for his nieces. This is my brother being awesome. Love you, Eric.

I added some swirls and magic sparkles to this one I did awhile ago. I think this looks better. And it hides the fact that I didn’t really bother to include an actual background. Just a color.
