“Thank you for your interest in this project.

Investigating more shows there is a Kim Walker with Hesperia Unified School District, but I doubt the real Kim Walker would be using a plain gmail address with a string of numbers in it…

(p.s.: while I found your site under unfortunate circumstances, I am loving your work Karen!)

Did you make it all the way through to the money scam, or did you manage to catch it before that? Do you have any additional detail on how the money scam works so others can be on guard against it?

Thankfully I didn’t send any information. When I asked to get on a call, she basically said I was good to start working. Here’s the rest of what she said today. Hope it could also help someone else:

“Thanks for getting back to me. For the illustration style, I’m thinking of a simple style. It will be great working with you on this project. I don’t have any problem with the way you are operating, we’re all good to go and you can start immediately.

I have informed the sponsor and he has agreed to send you a cashier’s check or bank certified check for the quoted price, my sponsor doesn’t make payment with PayPal because it’s not an individual transaction.

I would like to make full payment so you know that you have my job with you.
In the meantime, do get back to me with your information in the format below to mail the payment to you:

        1. Full Name to be written on the Check
        2. Full Physical Address
        3. Mobile Number
        4. Bank name

Your payment will be prepared once I have the requested details. Payment will be received before you turn in the illustrated images.

        Best Regard”

Hey everyone – Oh man, I got the same email recently. I told them I was busy until Oct 1 and they followed up exactly on the day yesterday.

I’ll leave the exchange below, it was very similar to Julie’s. The second email yesterday (and Googling and finding this thread thankfully) had me skeptical. Hopefully no one else falls for this!

    “Dear Gunter,

My name is Ed, an academic event organizer. Please note I am hearing impaired.

I hope this email finds you well. I am requesting an artist who specialize in illustration or drawing. I am writing to inquire about your interest and availability in assisting me on a project that requires illustration for an upcoming workshop.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Best regards,

    Ed Peterson.”

I replied that I’d be interested, but not until October. I asked a few questions also—most of which were ignored—and then they responded on Oct 1 with this:

    “Hi Gunter

Thank you for your interest in this project. These illustrations are to be used for a presentation in a Workshop coming up soon.

The title of the workshop is MONKEYPOX DISEASE: PRECAUTION AND PREVENTION.

The illustrations will be used in a lecture and the sole aim of the workshop is to enlighten the more youthful ages on the impending risks of staying away from precautionary measures and to show them the subsequent outcome of not safeguarding themselves against the monkeypox infection.

We are living in the age of technological advancement and the world is changing. We can’t overemphasize the need to show the more youthful age the significance of better approaches for safeguarding themselves and proper social association.
Therefore, this workshop is vital and I will make sure that participants are enlightened.

The participants are students between the ages of 15-18. I require your service to illustrate the under-listed scenarios.

    NOTE: Please make it

    1.) Horizontal (Landscape) presentation

    2.) Animated Cartoon styled

3.) The illustrations ought to fit on standard letter size (8.50 x 11.00 inches) and be delivered in a printed-out form.

I want exclusive rights/perpetuity to the printed artworks. These illustrations will be handed out to each participant in printed form so I want the illustrations to paint a vivid picture of the theme of the workshop, also note that the workshop will be in two Phases.

We have 4 illustrations in Phase One to be finished in 7 weeks.

Then 4 more illustrations in Phase Two are due for submission before the final event in 14 weeks.

Below is the outline of the scenarios to illustrate for Phase one:

    * The cemetery with tombstones and a caption that says ” Died of Disbelief”

    * A gathering of male and female health workers wearing a medical face mask that covers the mouth and nose.

    * An older lady taking the vaccine sitting on a seat.

*A group (not more than 7) Maintain a safe distance from others (at least 1 meter)

Below is the outline of the scenarios to illustrate for Phase Two:

    * A gathering of 5 youthful and elderly folks in a line and social distance.

    * A sick female patient on a hospital bed in a hospital setting.

    * A bold lettering design ( Typography ) that states “Stay away from contact with contaminated animals (especially sick or dead animals)”

    * One male and one female washing their hands using soap and water.

The budget for the project is $1,000 per illustration. Absolute: 8 Illustrated works of art. ( Total cost: $8,000 ).

Kindly get back to me on the proposition and representation above. Additionally, let me know whether the cost per piece is fine with you. If it’s not, do tell me your cost statement so we can bargain and work everything out.

I look forward to your acknowledgement and reading from you soon.

    Warm regards

    Ed Peterson.”

I have contacted the FBI etc about them. I played along with them to the point where they sent me a fake certified check. Then a few days later they said there has been a change and the job has been reduced so please direct deposit half of the agreed upon amount to this account. I even looked up the names on the accounts and they were felons. When I didn’t quickly deposit the amount they then said that person was called out of town and please send it to this person with another account.

  12. Keith Favazza says:

    Look at mine!

Hello Keith, thank you for your interest in this project. I found your portfolio on the AMI Vendor page.

We need illustrations for an upcoming workshop organized by the Pinnacle Foundation in Pennsylvania.

This workshop, titled “Combatting Monkeypox: The Importance of Vaccination and Immunization”, aims to educate young people about the risks of not taking preventive measures against monkeypox.

The illustrations will be used in a lecture to show the consequences of not protecting oneself from the infection. We aim to emphasize the importance of new ways to safeguard health and promote social interaction, especially among younger generations.

The participants are students aged 15-18, and we need illustrations for two phases of the workshop. Each phase requires four illustrations, to be completed within three weeks, for a total of eight illustrations.

    Phase One scenarios to illustrate:

    1. A doctor discussing diagnosis and treatment options with a patient.
    2. A gathering of male and female health workers wearing a medical face mask.
    3. A bustling vaccination center with healthcare workers efficiently administering vaccines to a diverse crowd.
    4.  In a crowded urban setting, people of diverse backgrounds and occupations navigate the streets, each adorned with various styles of nose masks.

    Phase Two scenarios to illustrate:

    1. In a cozy home setting, a person has a virtual consultation with a healthcare professional using a computer or smartphone.
    2. At the hospital, the ambulance pulls up to the emergency entrance, where a dedicated nurse awaits.

    3. A patient, connected to a ventilator, lies still, surrounded by a symphony of medical equipment.
    4. A large sports stadium transformed into a mass vaccination site, with numerous vaccination stations set up on the field.

Below are the detailed preferences for the illustrations:

    1. Size: The illustrations should be in landscape orientation (horizontal) and precisely fit on standard letter size (8.50 x 11.00 inches) paper. This size ensures that the illustrations are easily viewable and can be distributed to workshop participants in printed form.

    2. Color:
       – Vibrancy: Use vibrant colors to make the illustrations visually appealing and attention-grabbing. Bright colors can help convey the themes of hope, determination, and community engagement.
       – Coherence: Ensure that the colors used in each illustration are coherent and complement each other. Consistency in color scheme across all illustrations will contribute to a cohesive visual narrative.
       – Clarity: Prioritize clarity and legibility by using contrasting colors for key elements such as characters, objects, and text. This will facilitate understanding of the depicted scenarios, especially for the target audience of students aged 15-18.

    3. Style:
       – Cartoon Style: Adopt a cartoon style for the illustrations to enhance their accessibility and appeal to the workshop participants. This style should feature simplified, exaggerated, and expressive characters and elements.
       – Expressiveness: Emphasize expressiveness in character design and facial expressions to effectively convey emotions, actions, and intentions. Clear and exaggerated gestures can help communicate the messages of each scenario.
       – Detail Level: Strike a balance between detail and simplicity to ensure that the illustrations are visually engaging without being overly complex. Focus on conveying the essence of each scenario through key elements and visual cues.

Feel free to adjust these preferences according to your specific vision for the illustrations. Let me know if you need further clarification or assistance!

The budget for each illustration is $600, totaling $4,800 for all eight illustrations. Payment can be made via certified bank draft, cashier’s check, or bank certified check.

Please confirm if the proposed cost per illustration is acceptable to you, or provide your counteroffer for negotiation.

Looking forward to your acknowledgement and cooperation.

    Warm regards,

    – Josh Carlson

Wow. That sounds really plausible. It follows the same outline as the emails other users have shared here, but that isn’t inherently suspicious if you hadn’t seen the others. Even the budget isn’t necessarily outrageous, depending on the style and complexity of your work. The payment method is suspicious, but not glaringly so from the perspective of a less experienced artist who maybe hasn’t heard how prevalent fake check scams are today.

If you (or another artist on here) are unsure enough of a client that you would be hesitant to take a personal or business check from them, then a “certified bank draft, cashier’s check, or bank certified check” should not reassure you. If anything, it should make you more suspicious. Even just by itself, if everything else seemed fine, that one detail should give you pause.

Clearly, you already know, but for others here’s a resource on avoiding fake check scams: https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-spot-avoid-report-fake-check-scams

Mostly, I’d just advise artists to not take payment by check unless it’s someone you’re really sure of. A third party like PayPal or Square is much safer. They do charge a fee, but it’s better to pay them a cut than to gamble on your own that an internet-based stranger’s check is legit.

      Good luck to you!

        4. Deadline:

             – Part One: May 30

             – Part Two: June 20

Feel free to adjust these preferences according to your specific vision for the illustrations. Let me know if you need further clarification or assistance!

The budget for each illustration is $800, totaling $6,400 for all eight illustrations.

Oh, wow! I received the exact same email today. They didn’t even bother to change the name, lol.

I searched for ‘Josh Carlson’ all over LinkedIn and, unsurprisingly, couldn’t find any academic event organizer by that name.

Thanks for sharing this here. Now, I’m completely convinced it’s a scam.

I received a message with this wording just today! I was 75% sure it was a scam, but when I asked for more info (who is the organizer, what are the due dates, where is it taking place, style samples), they sent contact info for a legit arts organization, timelines, and sketch samples! An online copy/paste search of the wording led me to your post (and many more!) Now that I see the EXACT job description on your post from two years ago, my suspicions are confirmed. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    Hi Karen,

I’ve received a few of these through my contact form and at first considered, is this for real? and then deleted them. With the most recent, I decided to Google the email address, Davidhowland90@gmail.com, and that’s how I found your post and all the comments. Although I’m sorry you and other creatives are receiving these, too, I feel relieved to see a community of support. And I see you got the Davidhowland90@gmail.com, too. Thanks so much for posting about these!

    All best to everyone.

I have just received a ‘Kim Walker’ one, wanting only 4 illustrations, including perpetual rights -for $1500 a piece! THAT was suspicious.

some versions of the brief are very detailed and convincing. They have put a bit of work into this.

It is unfortunate as most of us do trust new clients to be genuine. There is a lot of goodwill in our business.

    Thanks Karen for all this!

This academic event organizer–I mean expediter–is getting smarter. He resisted naming a price first thing and, aside from being maybe a tad praise-heavy, didn’t say anything at all suspicious on the first contact. (Well, other than naming themself an academic event expediter, which is in itself a dead giveaway.)

His email being a gmail account that doesn’t match the name he gave (even close) is at least a yellow flag, and probably red. Especially for someone otherwise coming across so corporate.

Also, his addressing you as “Hello there” without using your name makes me think that this is just his standard copy-and-paste intro. Nothing personalized to you at all.

I don’t know the type of artwork you typically do, so I won’t say if $1,000 per image is too high. If it is, then that would be a red flag. Even the fact that he gives a price at all rather than asking for your bid is at least a yellow flag.

A bank draft is a cashier’s check, and would be as susceptible to counterfeit as any other sort of check. This is probably a fake check scam.

One last thing that did stand out to me is that this academic event expediter never named the company he was working for. He named his client, Placer High School (or possibly it’s educational board), but it didn’t sound like the school was his direct employer. He sounded like he was presenting himself as a freelancer or a consultant. A freelancer or consultant that doesn’t name their organization or include a link to their website in their email signature on the email that goes into that much detail on the project? Doesn’t feel right to me.

Yeah, this was definitely a scammer.

Glad you caught on before he wasted too much of your time or cost you any money.

I swear, what’s the deal with the monkeypox illustrations? That’s so weirdly common in these scams. It’s not even the proper term anymore. It’s supposed to be Mpox or something.

The important part to positively identity it as a scam is, “Payment methods include QuickBooks, cashier’s, or bank-certified checks.” Quickbooks is new, though. A Quickbooks check? Not even sure what that is.

anyway, yup. A scam. Glad you didn’t fall for it.

Bank draft or bank certified check, hmm? So, it’ll be a fake check scam.

      Was it a gmail account?

These are so frustrating because they’re so plausible. It gets our hopes up, only to find it’s a scammer. And it shades our expectations when even a legitimate client contacts us, because we’re halfway expecting them to be a scammer.

I hope they didn’t get any money from you.

I got the exact same from Wendy Fredrick, email: wendyfredrick67@gmail.com
I went to the bank this morning to try and deposit the cheque. The cashier was very thorough, and said that she couldn’t find the account it came from. She said that I could also deposit it, but if it bounced, I’d be charged $45, so she recommended I got in touch with them and clarify the mistake. A close call! I hadn’t started working on it, and I didn’t go home thinking I had money in the bank, that would later be demanded to be returned. I kept the cheque and the envelope, and intend to denounce it to the authorities.

Thank you for this thread. You can see the progression on these to looking more like real commission proposals.
