Menno Media Series

Scenes from the Life of Jesus Christ
Image 2 of 9

This is the second of nine illustrations for a short series for Menno Media for their Shine curriculum. Here we see a scene from the story of the woman at the well. I illustrated this story once before in a previous project for a different client. This is where Jesus tells the woman about who he is and about the figurative water he is offering in the form of his salvation.

An outdoor scene set in biblical times. A woman stands by a well talking to Jesus who is sitting on a nearby stone wall. She gestures towards the well. A distant town can be seen in the background.

The Wonder At The Well

This image was the one I was most proud of in this project. It’s an unusual bird’s-eye view and shows Jesus mostly as a reflection in the water. It’s the most creative way I found to show Him without directly showing Him.

Additionally, in this scene Jesus is talking to the woman about both real and figurative water. (He’s comparing his teachings to eternal water which will sate her figurative thirst forever.) So, showing the water here served the story.

A cartoon illustration depicting Jesus and a woman standing around a well. The image uses a bird's eye view looking down into the well. Jesus is seen in the reflection in the water below and as an arm resting on the lip of the well. Both people are wearing Roman-style clothing from the time period of Jesus' life.

Floating Mermaid

Here’s a mermaid I drew while procrastinating.

A mermaid floats in water with only her face above the surface. Under her, a school of fish swims by.

Inktober 2020 #20 – Coral

Some coral. With an eel. Because coral alone is boring. It needed an eel.

(Coral is really boring to draw. Like, REALLY boring.)

An eel swimming around some coral.

Inktober 2020 #2 – Wisp

The folklore around will ‘o the wisps is that they lure nighttime travelers out into the swamp where they get lost, sometimes forever. So, here’s a naughty little will ‘o the wisp luring a boy into trouble.

A will 'o the wisp lights up a swampy nighttime forest. A boy is following it.

Northern Lights

Here’s the same image as a night scene with the aurora borealis.

I took this a few weeks ago during a light rainstorm. Unfortunately, my shutter speed (1/25 sec) wasn’t nearly fast enough to capture the ripples without blurring. Even at this size, sized for the web, the blur is apparent. That’s pretty bad. The light was too low and I was having trouble getting the image bright enough. I had the iso set at 800, but in retrospect, I should have set it even higher so I could have gotten that shutter speed up. Oh well, too late now.
