Tangled Duck

I recently completed a project for Utah-based Fish for Garbage, a nonprofit organization that mobilizes communities through waterway cleanups and watershed education. They commissioned me to create a series of illustrations for a children’s activity book.

This image was a small spot illustration. It was based on a previous illustration I created as a portfolio piece depicting a girl cutting a balloon string from a tangled duck. That’s the illustration that initially attracted the client to my work. In this case, the duck was drawn to be a mallard.

Remember, balloons are fun, but if they get out into the environment, they can be a deadly hazard to wildlife which may swallow or become entangled in them.

Fish for Garbage Project – Cover

This image, the only full-color illustration, was for the cover.

The Neighborhood’s Night – Page 6

Here’s the 4th illustration for the book project I just finished for Learning A-Z. Page 6 of The Neighborhood’s Night by Juliana Catherine.

So, this is actually the full-wrap version of cover image, including a half inch bleed all around it. But it’s also going to be used on page 6 as a spot illustration. For that they’ll crop off about a quarter of the image from the left side and some from the top, bottom and right as necessary to fit the spot.

An illustration for page 6 of The Neighborhood's Night by Juliana Catherine. This is an image of a neighborhood evacuating due to encroaching wildfires.

Here’s an image for page 12 of a safety-themed coloring book commissioned by Positive Promotions.  This one uses the same scene as the one on the cover, only this time it’s too boys and they’re waiting at the curb, since the light still shows the, “Don’t Walk,” symbol.

Here’s an image for page 10 of a safety-themed coloring book commissioned by Positive Promotions.  This one covers the subject of stranger danger.  While there may very well be nothing nefarious at all about this friendly man in his unmarked panel van, it’s suspicious and he could be dangerous.  Better for the kids to stay away and not risk it.

I just noticed I messed up the girl’s feet a little.  The angle I drew them at doesn’t match the angle of the sidewalk.  😦

Here’s 2 of 4 images for page three of a safety-themed coloring book commissioned by Positive Promotions.  This page is showing four situations where you should call 911.  This one shows a crime happening.  Someone’s just snatched that backpack from the woman on the trail.

This illustration was originally supposed to be a purse rather than a backpack, but they switched it to a backpack in the first round of revisions.  For some reason I rather enjoy drawing backpacks.  I always draw them as this leather-bottom Jansport kind like I had when I was in high school.  🙂

Here’s an image for page two of a safety-themed coloring book commissioned by Positive Promotions.  A girl explains to her little brother that they live at 731 Fisher Road.  The mailbox and house both have the numbers 731 on them and the street sign at the corner shows their street is called Fisher Road.  The illustration shows how addresses work.

Here’s an image for page one of a safety-themed coloring book commissioned by Positive Promotions.  A bunch of kids playing safely in their front yards.  I tried to include a couple of kids playing street hockey because my youngest is a hockey girl, but they didn’t want to encourage kids playing in the street.  😦  Oh well.  So long as the client’s happy.  🙂
