Scenes from the Life of Jesus Christ
Image 9 of 9

This is the last image from a short series for Menno Media for their Shine curriculum. This is in the morning by the Sea of Galilee. After Jesus had helped his disciples catch a miraculously large haul of fish (153 of them!) they roasted some and lounged around on the beach eating a breakfast of bread and fish.

An outdoor scene set in biblical times. Jesus is sitting with three other men on the beach eating a meal of fish and bread. One man is skewering the fish for roasting over a fire while the other two chat with Jesus. There are baskets overflowing with fish in the foreground, way more fish than they can possibly eat. In the background you can see a boat floating on the sea with distant hills and a seagull in the sky.

This is the seventh image in a short series for Menno Media for their Shine curriculum. He’s alive again! Here we have Jesus resurrected and interacting with Mary Magdalene outside his open tomb.

An outdoor scene set in biblical times. Outside an open tomb, Jesus interacts with an overjoyed Mary Magdalene after his resurrection.

Here’s another sad one. Image six of nine in a short series for Menno Media for their Shine curriculum shows the preparation of Jesus’ body after his crucifixion. The men are Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus.

An outdoor scene set in biblical times. In front of an open tomb lies Jesus' dead body on a blanket. Two sad men kneel beside it, preparing the body for burial. One is preparing the winding cloths while the other is washing a foot. Three empty crosses can be seen on a hill in the distance.

Scenes from the Life of Jesus Christ
Image 5 of 9

Image five of nine in a short series for Menno Media for their Shine curriculum. After Jesus’ crucifixion, his mother and a few other women who loved him came to see him. It is a very sad scene, with the heavy clouds in the distance adding to the mood. The client specifically wanted this scene to be viewed from behind Jesus and looking down towards the women. That was both to obscure the most gruesome aspects of a crucifixion (this is a children’s illustration, after all) and to focus on the women’s overwhelming grief. We chose to also make the sky match the mood of the mourners.

An outdoor scene set in biblical times. Jesus Christ is hanging on the cross. He is viewed from behind to obscure the gruesome aspects of crucifixion. Beyond him, four women, including his mother, cry and hold each other in their grief. Behind them, dark clouds fill the sky.

This is image three for a short series for Menno Media for their Shine curriculum. This is where Jesus performs the miracle of resurrecting Lazarus. The two women are Lazarus’ sisters.

An outdoor scene set in biblical times. Jesus has just performed the miracle of resurrecting Lazarus. Here Lazarus emerges from his tomb, still wrapped in his winding cloth, to the delight and relief of his two sisters.

This is the second of nine illustrations for a short series for Menno Media for their Shine curriculum. Here we see a scene from the story of the woman at the well. I illustrated this story once before in a previous project for a different client. This is where Jesus tells the woman about who he is and about the figurative water he is offering in the form of his salvation.

An outdoor scene set in biblical times. A woman stands by a well talking to Jesus who is sitting on a nearby stone wall. She gestures towards the well. A distant town can be seen in the background.

I recently completed a short series for Menno Media for their Shine curriculum. This series illustrates 9 scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. This first one shows Jesus and Mary in attendance at a wedding feast. I believe this is the one at Cana where he turns water to wine.

An outdoor scene set in biblical times. A crowd of people mingle near a stone house, some sitting at a table with food set out. There are ceramic pots of water in the foreground. Jesus is speaking to a servant and gesturing towards the water pots. Mary, Jesus's mother, is watching Jesus.

Here on pages 11 and 12 we’re back to a two-page spread with a bleed around the edge. This illustration is where the penny drops. She says she knows that the Messiah is coming, and He responds with, “I am he!” Which, skeptical me, thinks would lead to a lot of questions to confirm such a claim, but this is a bible story, so she takes him at his word.

Remember how I’m not supposed to show Jesus’s face clearly? This scene comes the closest in the book to showing His face, but I gave Him shaggy hair to cover His eyes.

The second panel on page 10 shows people praying outdoors in nature near a tent. This represents another way Jesus says people will pray after they learn his teachings.

A cartoon illustration depicting an outdoor scene with some trees, a tent, and distant hills. Two people are seen praying. One while kneeling in the tent and the other standing by a tree looking out into the distance.
