Cartoon of a braying jackass. Literally rolling on the floor laughing.
There are plenty of perfectly nice donkeys in
the world, but this guy is a braying jackass.
Various bits of recent politics inspired me to draw this elephant yesterday.
Maybe I shouldn’t sketch while listening to political news.

A worried elephant.
I like him, though. Sort of feel sorry for him. Poor guy.

Open in Photoshop. Auto contrast, auto color, auto tone–hey, that’s weird. The auto tone made the blossoms look great, but the background look blue. So, then I masked out the blossom and used the auto tone on that, but only used the auto contrast and auto color on the background, with just a hint of desaturation.
I love daffodils. They’re my favorite flower, even though generally I’m not a huge fan of yellow. But on daffodils, I make an exception. I’m usually disappointed in my attempts at daffodil photography (they never seem to want to face the camera the right way) but I think I like this shot. It looks cheerful, like a daffodil should. 🙂

Okay, so this has been fiddled with, but not that much. I masked out the blossom and upped the vibrance and saturation by 10 each. Then I lowered the saturation for everything else by 40-something.
I really like the striation on the petals between the red and almost-beige parts. I thought it was interesting.
It’s also not a standard tulip. It’s some fancy breed with funny petals, but it’s still a tulip.
And here’s something completely different. Bear and Coyote. I think Coyote shouldn’t have stolen Bear’s fish. But Coyote, being the trickster he is, will get out of it somehow.

Full Disclosure:
I should mention that, although this is in a tribal style with Native American folklore characters, I’m not a member of any indigenous nation. I don’t want to mislead anyone into thinking I identify as a Native Artist.
I don’t plan to do any more in this style because I’m worried that it counts as cultural appropriation. I did this one because I think the style is beautiful and I wanted to see what I could do with it. I really like how it turned out and it’s my own idea and my own story, but it isn’t in a style I have a cultural connection with. I don’t want to upset anyone and I can see how it might, so I’ll limit myself to just this one.

I made some Zazzle things with this design. Those can be found here.

Just a quick sketch for the holidays.

Edit: I decided I didn’t like the colors so much after I originally posted it. Too pale and flat. So I played with them a little and came up with this, which I like better.
It’s kind of sketchy and I think the arms look weird. Not worthy of the portfolio, but it’s still fun and refreshing. 🙂
