Butterfly Vector

I recently completed a little illustration for children’s magician, Jimmy Joza. This butterfly was drawn in Adobe Illustrator. (Yes, I can work with vectors!) He plans to have it printed on a 36-inch silk and use as a prop in his act. He has an existing caterpillar image he plans to print on another silk, and he wanted me to match the art style of that one so that it was clear the two images were the same character. He also had a sample butterfly with rainbow colors that he wanted me to use as a color scheme for the wings. Here’s what I came up with!

A vector drawing of a cute, cartoon butterfly with rainbow-colored wings. The butterfly is centered, facing the viewer, with its wings spread out symmetrically behind it. There is a blue swirly background framed with a pink border.

Photomanipulation: Butterfly on Flowers

I was playing with Photoshop today and photomanipulated this.  It should look like a realistic butterfly perched on a watercolor-ish flower cluster.  What do you think?

The butterfly is a Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta).  I’m not sure what the flower is, but it’s one of those common landscaping flowers you see in planters and beds all over the place.  I took this photo at a mini-golf course last summer in Sister Bay, Wisconsin.

Macro Photos of Flowers

I just came back from a family trip up to Wisconsin.  Since the kids wouldn’t have the patience to wait for me to draw pictures of the things I saw, I took photos instead.  Even that tried their patience a bit, but they lived through it.  🙂

Here’s a collection of close-up flower shots I took.  Both garden flowers and weed flowers.  And three that aren’t actually flowers, but they are plants.  I don’t know what all of them are, but if you recognize one that isn’t labeled, let me know.

Some of these are available as prints.
