A Basketball Story – Interior 1

Here’s the first interior page of the picture book I just finished for Entrepreneur Media, Inc. This image will have text overlaid over the sky and maybe the tops of the buildings. This is a nice spring day.

A Basketball Story – Cover

This week I finished illustrations for a new picture book for Entrepreneur Media Inc. Here’s a mock-up of the cover. The final text will be formatted a little different, probably a different font, but this gives you the idea.

A cover mock-up for a picture book titled A Basketball Story: Always be Humble, based on a true story by: Miles Davis-Majors and Illustrated by: Karen B. Jones.

The cover is divided into four quadrants. The upper left shows a team picture of the Jackrabbits team, a youth basketball team consisting of players around 10 years old. The upper right has the same sort of team picture for the Sea Turtles team. The lower left is a close-up of three Jackrabbit players' faces in profile, receding from the viewer. The lower right is the same for the Sea Turtles. The center has a basketball with the title text and bylines overlaid.

A little behind-the-scenes detail: I originally had a different cover design concept in mind (below) but the client wanted this one (above) because they wanted to show everyone on both teams and didn’t want them to look aggressive.

Two basketball players, both around 10 years old, hold a basketball between them with one hand each. The other hand for each is a fist. The Jackrabbit player on the left is frowning with eyes narrowed and eyebrows down. The Sea Turtles player on the right has a similar aggressive expression, but with his teeth showing. The Jackrabbits player is an African American boy with his hair bleached blonde on the top. The Sea Turtles player is an East Asian boy with thick, shaggy hair. A crowd seated on bleachers is out of focus behind them.

Here’s the 9th illustration for the book project I just finished for Learning A-Z. Page 11 of The Neighborhood’s Night by Juliana Catherine.

This one is another gym scene. Almost like the camera pulled backwards from the last illustration.

Here Leena’s family is getting settled a bit when a family they’re friends with shows up. The woman, Saanvi, is wearing a sari because I’ve seen Indian women in my neighborhood wear these, but I’ve never actually drawn one. So, when the client said they wanted me to make her Indian, I decided to go ahead and give her this traditional outfit while I was at it. It was fun to draw. I kept the decorative pattern really simple, though, because I didn’t want her clothes to have way more detail than the clothes of the other characters in the story so that it looked inconsistent. I do hope I drew it right.

It just occurred to me that I don’t think I drew anyone with glasses on in this story. I should have done that. Oh well. Mental note to self to put some glasses in the drawings for my next project, if possible.

Safety Book – Interior Image – Page 14

Here’s an image for page 14 of a safety-themed coloring book commissioned by Positive Promotions.  This page covers bullying.  A boy is picking up his books, presumably after some bullies knocked them onto the floor.  Probably the same boys that are smirking at him from the other side of the room.  But, luckily for him, a friend has stopped to help him pick up his books.  Isn’t that nice?

Here’s an image for page one of a safety-themed coloring book commissioned by Positive Promotions.  A bunch of kids playing safely in their front yards.  I tried to include a couple of kids playing street hockey because my youngest is a hockey girl, but they didn’t want to encourage kids playing in the street.  😦  Oh well.  So long as the client’s happy.  🙂

Recycling Book – Page 9

Here’s an image that appears on page 9 of a coloring book about recycling commissioned by Positive Promotions for Earth Day.  Since this whole project was a rush job, I don’t think I got the characters quite as consistent as I usually do.  I think the boy on the left side’s head needs to be larger in comparison to his body.  Oh, well.  I’ll try to do better in the future.   🙂

Here’s an image that appears on page 7 of a coloring book about recycling commissioned by Positive Promotions for Earth Day.  I don’t think I quite hit the character consistency as well as I could have on the girl on the left.  Her cheeks really should have been a little rounder.  Casualty of this being a rush job.  But I really like how the overall scene with the tree and the swing and such turned out.
