Here’s the first page of a Petting Zoo commission for Learning A-Z. I think the pigs were the most fun to draw. I managed to put at least one in each of the three images for this set. I particularly like the one reaching for the bottle on the right.

This commission only had two images. So, here’s the second of the Moving Day set for Learning A-Z. The boy is packing up his room. Looks like he’s a Yankees fan.

Another commission for Learning A-Z. This one is a family packing up their living room and kitchen, getting ready to move.
One problem with this scene was that they wanted both rooms to show, but in a portrait-oriented image. So, I decided to make this house a front-to-back split with a short stairway between the two levels. That let me put the two rooms one in front of the other, but with the kitchen a half-story higher so as to increase the height of the image and keep the living room from blocking it.
It’s done entirely in one-point perspective. Everything except the people and a few curves was drawn with virtual rulers.
It’s probably a small mid-eighties tract home, judging by the layout. One that’s been updated with wood floors and new appliances. But the kitchen is still too small and it doesn’t have a dishwasher. I’d move too, if I were them.

Here’s a second winter fair illustration commissioned by Learning A-Z.

An illustration commissioned by Learning A-Z. Kids and their families at a winter fair enjoying the cold weather activities.

A couple weeks ago I attended the SCBWI’s event, Graphic Novel Day. One of the presenters there was Ben Hatke who gave two very nice lectures and signed a copy of Space Girl for my daughter Katie. (Who was thrilled to get it!) I like him because he’s a total geek that plays D&D and Munchkin and does archery and told a hilarious story about getting arrested during a D&D game with his friends. (Plus he’s a talented illustrator.)
I was disappointed that one of his books that he talked about wasn’t in the little mini-bookstore that day. So I ordered it. It came awhile ago and I was not disappointed. Nobody Likes a Goblin is a terrific little picture book about a little goblin who has to go off and save his friend Skeleton from the adventurers that invaded and looted his dungeon. In this story, the goblin is the hero and the adventurers are the home invaders and thieves. (As they should be depicted!) Anyway, I highly recommend Nobody Likes a Goblin by Ben Hatke.
(I find it hilarious that the princess was piled in with the loot on the adventurer’s cart. So much for “rescuing” the princess, huh?)

One more piece for Learning A-Z. A different view of the waiting room in a veterinarian’s office.

Here’s another piece for Learning A-Z. A different view of the waiting room in a veterinarian’s office. This time with just the vet, one client, and a cat.

Here’s a recent piece for Learning A-Z. The waiting room in a veterinarian’s office. The unusual clientele is because this is for the educational market. The words for the animals (except for the cat) all have unusual plural forms. Wolf/wolves, sheep/sheep, goose/geese, mouse/mice.
